SHA Debuts Student-Led Conferences, and Student Voice Has Something to Say

By Luisandiel Rivera

Student led conferences took place in SHA and students felt great about them. With the SLC’ being over a month old feeling about it are pretty much set in stone.

Student-led conferences are conducted all over the world, including at Hong Kong Baptist University.

According to students the SLC’s were great because of either their own previous experiences or because of the simplicity of actually doing them with parents and not teachers.

“I got to explain in my own words and advocate for myself,” said sophomore Yvette Rivera

Students also felt that they got to prove their work and show why they did well or poorly in a certain assignment

Teachers and faculty in SHA felt great about the conferences as well and thought that they were a great change to the usual seriousness of parent teacher conferences.

“We feel that it’s more important for parents and family to know the progresses of their student from their own mouth” said Principal Dena Cooper.

Teachers and faculty were also very pleased with student participation and the amount of parents that came in.

“85% percent of students and parents came to the school,” said head of SLCs Alexander Kerkhoff. “ Thats a good part of SHA.”

SHA has done the SCL’s to change how parent teacher conferences were done, to give students a voice, and to let students show their progress from their own mouth.  Months later, students  felt great about them and enjoyed the change.

“I loved the experience and like the fact that it wasn’t so deadpan and serious” said Rivera. “I felt that I was just talking to my parents”

SLC’s were done to alter the bad vibe of parent teacher conferences.

“We did this because of previous success in my own previous school and to change the parent teacher conferences,” said Kerkhoff.

With the over all success of the SLC’s, the original planers will be doing them again the the spring for a new chance for a smashing success
